About East Bay Placenta Services

My Name is Shauna

Let me tell you a little bit about myself...

In my past life, I was a painter, working professionally on theatrical sets, home interiors, and on canvas. I spent most of my life struggling with life threatening depression and a severe anxiety disorder. Then in my mid 30s, life as I knew it was flipped upside down in an instant; I became a mother. During my first pregnancy I was understandably concerned about postpartum depression. When I learned about the benefits of consuming one's placenta and how it can reduce postpartum depression I did not hesitate to hire a specialist. Once my baby boy was here, it wasn't easy, but I never hit the lows I once experienced and feared. I believe in the benefits of placenta so much I became a specialist.

My personal struggles and successes with pregnancy, birth, motherhood, miscarriage and feminism is what fuels my passion as a birth worker and artist. After my first was born I became a birth doula. After my second little one was born I became compelled to paint portraits of pregnant women. Shortly thereafter I became a Placenta Specialist.

Both of my birth experiences were life changing. I strongly believe that my rite of passage into motherhood, the consumption of my placenta, and a strong support system contributed to much of my relief, not to mention the joy my children have brought me. It is my desire to stay connected to these experiences and help other women to feel as empowered as I am!

I am certified as a Placenta Specialist through Cornerstone Doula Trainings of San Francisco. I am certified in accordance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standards and I have a California Food Handlers card. I renew these every year. I take my work with placentas very passionately. I never process more than one placenta at a time, and I always treat every placenta with care and respect.

As an artist...

I offer custom pregnancy portraits. Each portrait captures a moment in time and are based on real photos of a woman pregnant, giving birth, and the like. The essence of each portrait shows the power and strength a woman must find to bring the life she carries into the world.

In addition to my pregnancy portraits I paint from my heart: pain, struggle, loss, strength and empowerment. I mostly use the female form to express these experiences because to be a woman is to be in pain, to struggle, to be strong and to empower. All of the artwork throughout this site is my work. If you are interested in commissioning me for a painting please email me at [email protected] You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram @artistshaunawileynaefke.

When I’m not working or creating, I enjoy physical fitness, healthy baking and playing with my kids. I am originally from Phoenix, AZ but have been living in the Bay Area since 1996. I live in Alameda with my loving husband and our two amazing kids.
